Peptide storage guide for research laboratories
How to store research peptides so they stay usable: lyophilised powder, reconstituted solution, capsules and topical solutions each have different needs, and most avoidable losses come from temperature cycling.

Lyophilised peptides
Freeze-dried powder is the most stable form. Keep the sealed vial in a freezer at −20 °C, protected from light. Before opening, let the vial reach room temperature so that moisture does not condense on the powder.
Recap the vial promptly and return it to the freezer. Opening and closing a cold vial repeatedly draws in moisture, which is the main cause of degradation in powder.
Reconstituted peptides
Once dissolved, peptides are far less stable. Hold the solution at 2–8 °C, use a bacteriostatic diluent where repeated withdrawal is planned, and do not repeatedly freeze and thaw it.
Where a study runs over days, aliquot once into separate tubes and work from those. Label each with compound, concentration, diluent and date.
Capsules and topical solutions
Capsules stay sealed and dry at room temperature, away from light and humidity, with the desiccant left in the bottle.
Topical research solutions are kept cool and dark, and working dilutions are prepared fresh for each experiment.
Why peptides degrade
Peptides lose activity through a handful of predictable routes: hydrolysis of the peptide backbone, oxidation of methionine, cysteine and tryptophan residues, deamidation of asparagine and glutamine, and aggregation or adsorption to surfaces.
Cold, dry and dark conditions slow all of these. That is the whole logic behind freezing lyophilised powder and refrigerating solution.
Labelling and record-keeping
Label every vial and aliquot with compound, concentration, diluent, date and batch reference. Those five facts are what let a laboratory trace a result back to the material that produced it.
Common mistakes
- Storing a reconstituted vial at room temperature.
- Freeze-thawing the same solution several times.
- Leaving copper peptides in bright light.
- Using a non-bacteriostatic diluent for a multi-withdrawal vial.
- Not recording the batch reference when a vial is opened.
Where to buy diluent
Bacteriostatic and sterile diluents are listed in the research peptides for sale index. Certificates of analysis for any compound are available from support@eupeptidesciences.com.

Peptide Storage: frequently asked questions
How long do lyophilised peptides last in the freezer?
Stored sealed at −20 °C and protected from light they remain stable for extended periods; the certificate and label give the batch-specific guidance.
How long can a reconstituted peptide be kept?
At 2–8 °C for the window your protocol sets. Shorter is safer, and peptides differ.
Why let the vial warm before opening?
To stop water condensing on the cold powder, which speeds degradation.
